Miraculous spring

From time immemorial, in a grove near the slope of a high mountain, to the west from the village of Zhitniki in Vinnitsa region, a healing spring welled out from under the ground. Natives had been drinking and wondering at its miraculous properties, but an industrial bottling of "Regina" started in 1898, when an enterprising Polish nobleman Alexander Sabanskiy, who possessed the wood and the spring itself, got interested in the water.

Then a small house was built in which "Regina" was poured into tanks and brought to the station of Kotyuzhany. There it was poured into cisterns and sent mostly abroad. Soon "Regina" became popular in restaurants, hotels, cafes of Western Europe.  After Alexander, the son of Mr. Sabanskiy, had examined the water in Warsaw, "Regina" was equated to the most famous mineral waters of that time.

Since the Sabanskiys were close-fisted, they prohibited locals to use the water and were only selling it. So, it is not surprising that in 1917 the spring fell under "the punishing sword of the revolution" and it was razed to the ground.

In the early 1950-s of the last century, the engineer of the regional department of forestry and regional ethnographer Leonid Shipovich wrote down recollections of old residents of the village of Zhitniki who had at their time worked at Mr. Sabanskiy's spring. The healing water interested scientists. In 1946, employees of the Vinnitsa regional bacteriological laboratory professor Gashe and doctor Schrabstein got interested in the possibility of resumption of bottling of the water and carried out preliminary examinations. They were those who cleared the way for "Regina".

The enthusiast Shipovich had to knock many leading doors before proper research was carried out and they started to bottle the water again. In 1953, after having carried out thorough examinations, the Odessa Institute of Health Resort Study and Balneology gave its recommendations as to advisability to use "Regina" as natural mineral water possessing unique properties.

Before 1961, the water had been bottled directly at the spring, and from there it had been sent to various parts of the Soviet Union. Then almost the entire production was being carried out manually. Later, a workshop with a semi-automatic filling line was built on the basis of the Murovanokurilovetskiy food industrial complex.

Soon, not far from the existing spring geologists discovered three more springs and in 1968 the decision to construct a mineral water factory near them was made. But being in a great haste, poor examinations of the local hydrological conditions were carried out, landslips began to  take place and the construction was stopped.  Then a new place was determined for the factory - outside the reserved area "Pereladino". At  first, the water was delivered to the place of bottling by automobile cisterns, and in 1982, a stainless steel pipeline connected the spring with the factory conveyer.

Since October 1995, the enterprise had been reorganized into the open joint-stock company Murovani Kurilivtsy factory of mineral water "Regina", which later formed a part of the powerful conglomerate Premier-finance.  Today, the board of the company is headed by an experienced business manager Il'ya Kaglyak.

New owners did understand that without a substantial modernization of the bottling methods the water from the spring "Regina" would tail along in the thriving market of mineral waters.   That was the reason that in 2006 a new building was constructed, in which an advanced purification, filling and bottling line purchased for more than a million euro from a renowned Austrian company Kosme were installed.

Uneasy was the way of "Regina" to consumers. But it is useless and stupid to fight what was given to people by the nature. Today, the healing and miraculous properties of the mineral water "Regina" are available for everybody.
